EARTH BERMED SOIL CEMENT MODIFIED SALTBOX HOME

DESIGNED BY: John Whiting
SCALE: Not to Scale
LOCATION: SESENE 1/4 S. 8, T. 38 N., R. 28 W., ROSEBUD RESERVATION, SD

This design evolved over several years of spare time spent dreaming and designing one’s dream home.  A lot of effort and duplication went into this design.  I have a stack of quadrille paper drawings about two feet high.  Another pile of drawings on all different sizes and types of paper.  Now with the electronic age I have graduated to may files on my computer using CAD software.  I have started my second model in 1/2” = 1’ scale.  Now I’m putting it on the web.  Actual construction like all dream homes is hampered by lack of dollars.  I have acquired the land and have excavated the footprint of the building into a hillside, so I can say that I have started this project.
I presently live in a new 5 bedroom house on ten acres.  When I moved in three years ago their was a lack of thrill homeowners should have because of the desire to have my dream home.
The other thing is that I have never cared for traditional stick built construction used in modern homes.  After I got out of the service in 1972, I was dead serious about building a geodesic dome home for myself and my single lifestyle.  The problem with these type of alternate style homes is that funding agencies only like to finance traditional stick built type houses that they can easily resell if by some chance you default and can’t repay the loan.

During this time I was approved for a HUD loan to purchase a traditional stick built home.  The only sweat equity I would be allowed would be some of the finish work like painting and carpet.  I could handle the painting but what do I know about carpet or where would I get the expensive tools to stretch a rug.
The other problem I ran into was three nephews, one niece, and their half-brother that were abandoned.  Those plus my three children for a total of eight all born between February of 1978 to Febrary of 1982, talk about a ball and chain, but even if I had it to do over I doubt I would have done anything different.
During the time from then to now I was on a waiting list for a house for 12 years.  Now my youngest daugther will graduate from high school this spring and is planning to go to college this fall.  I guess I can look forward to grand-children.  Latisha has been hanging around the house since she was a rugrat.  Now she is only 15 months and seems terrible twos are already here and speeding toward status of curtain climber.  The score is one new living room lamp down and one to go!  But ain’t they sweet!
If you are still with me now we can get down to how the above design came about.  Below you will find links to pages that attempt to explain that process.
