STORY OF THE NAME

The story of the name “The Upper Keya  Paha Virtual Post”  comes from the editors roots.  Born and raised near the confluence of Antelope and Rock Creek, the beginning of the Keyapaha River on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation, the editor has adopted and split the word for graphic appeal.  The Lakota word keyapaha translates to “keya” turtle and “paha” hills or buttes, in this case turtle buttes.  There is a butte along the Keyapaha River in southern Tripp County where the rock formation on top of the butte resembles a turtle.
Antelope and Rock Creeks are mostly within the confines of Antelope Community on the Rosebud Reservation which today’s exterior boundaries are Todd County of South Dakota.  The majority of the community members of Antelope Community live along Antelope Creek just East of the city of Mission, SD.  Antelope Creek being part of the upper Keyapaha Basin, thus The Upper Keya Paha Trading Co.
For more information about the Rosebud Reservation feel free to browse elsewhere for the History of the Rosebud Reservation.
