JW’s Tractors

These pages are dedicated to my grandfather, Fred Einspahr, “National Soil Conservation Farmer of the Year, 1964.”

Figure 1.  My fleet consists of three tractors: 1964 Einspahr, 1957 Ford 871 Select-O-Speed, and 1960 IHC McCormick Farmall 460 Gas.

My earliest recollection of tractors goes back to the mid 50’s.  My father owned a Ford Tractor, mower, rake and 40 head of cows.  I can remember him hooking up the hay rack and pitching on hay from stacks to feed his herd.  He would wire the steering wheel so the tractor would travel in a circle.  When he would shout I would stand on the clutch pedal with both feet to stop the tractor.  He would pitch off some hay and shout again at which time I would slowly step off the clutch pedal.  This would have been the winter of 1954-55 when I was 5 years old.
His neighbor owned a larger tractor with a farmhand loader to stack hay.  At a later date he purchased a small square baler.  Between the two of them they put up enough hay to feed their cattle.  After that my brother and I would take turns driving the tractor while he and my father would pick up bales.

My grandfather owned only two tractors.  He had a 1947 Farmall M Propane with a narrow front end.  I think he bought this unit new because he always had it as long as I can remember.  I don’t recall what tractor he had before he purchased a used John Deere R.  I was always close to my grandfather.  When he bought his John Deere R tractor and being christened John David along with my fascination with his “poppin John” tractor it was only natural that he nicknamed me after his R, “Putt Putt!”  Also during this same period another cousin that was only a month and ten days younger than myself also spent our summers on the farm.  Mike sat on a barrel that had gasoline on top of it.  The gasoline blistered his butt.  When my grandfather would see use he would chuckle and shake his head, “Putt Putt and Blister Butt!”  Took us many years to live down these nicknames.

Custom Built Garden Tractor - 1964 Einspahr

My first real tractor - 1957 Ford 871 Select-O-Speed

My latest tractor - 1960 IHC McCormick Farmall 460 Gas

These tractors are not just for collecting, for they are working tractors that are used to maintain my home site and that of my oldest daughter.  We live on twenty acres on trust land in Antelope Community on the historic Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation that is located in south central part of the state of South Dakota.  I do plan to work on these units to improve their appearance, function, and performance but they will have to earn their keep in the process.  Feel free to surf these pages to monitor this process now and in the future.
