1956 Willys CJ5 Universal

Have you every finally found something you always wanted?  I have always want a Willys CJ5!  In 1968 I found a older Jeep frame with springs and a bare body.  I started to rebuild a Chevy 283 motor for it.  My intention was to use the V-8 and a automatic transmission with a straight front axle and a narrowed rearend.  I wanted something I could drive around the local area plus give a little excitement if the pedal was put to the metal.
I tore the engine down.  I had the block boiled, the cylinders ridged reamed and honed, and new cam bearings installed.  I found a good set of power pack heads and was about to get the valves ground in them.
This brought us to another problem.  It is shortly after the Tet Offensive in beautiful southeast Asia, nineteen years old, single, working in a filling station, no intention on hiding at college, not a sole surviving son, no intention on getting married, no influence with the local draft board, classified 1-A, and damn close to, “Uncle Sam Wants You!”

Now after 35 years, always on the lookout for a good deal on a Jeep CJ5, I finally found one.  I found a 1956 Willys CJ5 Universal.  It has a four banger “F-Head” engine with a three speed transmission.  It also has a factory metal half cab.
It joins my fleet of unsual reservation “Buck Rods!”  They include a 1956 Chevy 3800 Dually Flatbed, 1963 International Binder HD 3/4 Ton 4X4 Four Door Pickup, 1965 Willys Jeep J-10 4X4 Pickup,  1966 Ford F100 Pickup, 1974 Chevelle Wagon, 1981 Impala Diesel Sedan, 1985 Dodge Charger, 1988 Chevy Silverado 3/4 Ton 4X4, and a 1997 Lumina family sedan.  These are complemented with several parts vehicles and past treasures, 1973 Jeep 4X4 Pickup, 1976 Dodge Ramcharger (I bought new), 1970’s Jeep Wagooneer, and a couple Ford’s to make pickup box trailers.

Here is a picture of my 56 Willys CJ5 with the tires and wheels off of my 65 Jeep J-10.  The tires are 31X10.50X15 Radial Mud and Snow on 15X8 reversed wheels.  To keep them on the CJ5 has set the coarse for the first improvement project, a four inch suspension lift kit and some fender flares.  I can’t wait until summer to take the ugly top off and the second improvement project, a full softtop, probably in black.
